HISTORY: Amateur Radio’s Newest Frontier – Amateur Radio in Human Spaceflight

Early on the morning of December 1, 1983, NASA Astronaut Owen Garriott, W5LFL, talked with Lance Collister, WA1JXN in Frenchtown, Montana. The contact was unique because it was the first Space to Ground contact. The STS-9 activity was the first to enable ham radio from space.
